The change of a year is an exciting process. Even if we
don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions, there is something about starting
fresh that inspires a sense of hope.
Yet when we are so happily looking forward to starting
fresh, we forget to look back and appreciate what happened in the previous
year. The previous year that we so warmly anticipated quickly becomes our
biggest enemy who we desperately want to run away from.
That’s the funny thing about us humans. We always want a
fresh start. We like to make ourselves believe that this time it will be
different. This time we aren’t going to fall into the same trap because we
have been there, bought the t-shirt and worn it. But, what happens when before
you know it you are doing the same mistake again?
Sometimes we are too busy looking for what we want in our
lives that we forget to appreciate what already exists. We become so fixated in
this idea of change that we neglect the present. Since the present is the only
thing that exists, we live for a false hope that tomorrow will be different.
We often either fiercely hold on to the rocks of the past or
try to ignore them, despite lugging them on our backs. Looking forward to the
future, to the present, doesn’t mean turning our back to the past. There is
something special about looking at the past, smiling and then facing
forward, because we know that those moments were the necessary to take you
here, exactly where you need to be.
